Not Your Normal Valentine’s Colors!

Okay, I get it…not quite what you’d expect for a Valentine’s card. Maybe it’s a “new to me relationship, not ready for Valentine’s commitment” card. Or with a different sentiment, maybe it’s a wedding card? I wanted something different. I don’t send out Valentine’s cards so I was struggling to get away from the red, melon mambo, pink thing.

Then my husband, who is an artist, came into my studio. He went over to my cardstock storage and started rummaging around. He came out with Cajun Craze. Hmm… I had already embossed the basic white cardstock with the So Swirly embossing folder but I was trying to figure out what color ink to use for the reverse embossing technique.

I pulled out my trusty Color Wheel from Stampin’ Up! and put Cajun Craze in the Complementary window. Low and behold…Flirty Flamingo was there! Sold. So I gently rubbed the Flirty Flamingo ink pad over the embossed cardstock and came up with the cool reverse embossing technique. Now for the next step….

I used two of the heart dies from Hearts of Elegance dies to make a “frame” with Cajun Craze and Flirty Flamingo (save those heart cut outs for the next card!). Then I snipped the Cajun Craze heart and wove the Flirty Flamingo heart though it, covering up the snip with the Flirty Flamingo heart. That can be a little tricky and I used a rolled up glue dot to help keep the Flirty Flamingo heart in place.

Using liquid glue, I glued the combined hearts down on the embossed cardstock. I stamped the sentiment in Flirty Flamingo and used the 1 3/4″ circle punch and dimensionals to adhere it. A few heart sequins and I was done!

It’s not the traditional color combination for Valentine’s Day, but I like it! What other colors do you use for Valentine’s?
